Pippa's Journey with a Brain Tumour

ABOUT PIPPA

Pippa turned 9 years old on February 13th 2013.

She is in Year 3 with long hair,  captivating blue eyes and an amazing zest for life.  There is always a contagious smile on her face.  She is a natural sports person, loves writing and maths at school and is a caring and thoughtful friend to everyone she meets.  Pippa has two older brothers, James & Patrick who adore her.  I’m her mum and I truly believe she was put on this earth to bring absolute endless joy to not only to me, but anyone who crosses her path.

Her favourite colour is yellow and aqua, she writes random names on her golf balls that she knows no one else has, she loves singing at the top of her voice, her cuddles and kisses are spectacular, she dreams of going to Paris, her heart is full of kindness and her laugh is utterly infectious.  She likes Taylor Swift, Little Mix, High School Musical and Pitch Perfect.

On Wednesday 26th June our little family was shattered by the news we were delivered.

Our gorgeous Pippa had a lump in her brainstem which was affecting the left side of her face.  Within the space of a couple of hours my father whisked Pippa and I off to the Royal Children’s Hospital (a four hour drive in thick fog in the middle of the night) for further investigations.  Prior to this day she had developed some symptoms:  she had “lost her smile” on the left side of her face; at basketball the week before I noticed she was running with her head in an unusual position (turned to the right); on the Monday she couldn’t move her left eye to track my finger;   and on the Tuesday night as I tucked her into bed I saw that her left eyelid did not completely close.  By Wednesday her 6th & 7th Cranial Nerves had aligned (or misaligned) to confirm there was a lump in her brainstem.

I guess as a GP ! I am expected not to be affected by every patient that I see ! However I believe we are still humans ! I am a mother myself ! And although I saw Pippa for only 10 minutes or so ! However she is one of the few patients that have touched my heart ! Her smile ! How bubbly she was ! And how excited she was when I talked about going through MRI machine ! I wish you all the best Pippa ! Stay strong Virginia … Have faith !!!

Hey Virginia, James and Patrick, I know I’m a bit late to comment, but i wanted to share a few of my favorite memories of me and Pippa. i was as the beach the summer before she got cancer, we were boogie boarding, splashing each other, and having a blast. Neither of us wanted to leave but we had to. This other memory was on Pippa’s last day of school, i was holding a basket ball in my hand to Pippa and she kept on knocking it out of my hand, i was confused at first, but then i realised she just wanted to dribble the basket ball, we did this for 5 minutes until we got told off, she looked very happy.
